What is BMI?

BMI (Body Mass Index) is a measure of a person’s body mass relative to their height. This is a great way for the “average” person to judge whether or not they are overweight for their height, and hence their relative risk for chronic diseases such as heart disease, type 2 diabetes, high blood pressure, stroke, and some forms of cancer.

In very general terms, for a given height, the heavier a person is the more this might suggest they are carrying excess fat. It does not however take into account body composition and is therefore an unreliable indicator for heavily muscled people, and also does not consider age, gender or frame size. For this reason BMI is not as popular a measure of a person’s health as it once was amongst health professionals, but when used in conjunction with certain other parameters such as waist circumference or body fat percentage it can still be a helpful, quick indicator for most of us.

Please check your BMI against the chart below to determine whether or not you lie within a “normal” range, but bear in mind the above limitations. It should not be used for children and teens, who would be measured under different guidelines.

What Is My Ideal Weight?

Your ideal weight for your height is a very subjective figure, affected by the same limitations as BMI. However, if you take these limitations into account then in very simple terms, your “ideal weight” would be one which places your BMI within the normal range. Please use the chart above to determine yours.
